Room 152 Charity Yard Sale in Support of the IWK Foundation

Poster by NSCAD Fashion Design student Brianna West.

This Saturday Sarah’s store will host their 4th annual Charity Yard Sale,  where you’ll be able to snag some amazing finds for only a toonie (no joke)! Think anything from Old Navy to Burberry… you just never know what you’ll find burried in those bins! For the third year in a row Room 152 will be supporting the IWK Foundation, a charity that means a heck of a lot to Sarah. In 2003, her son Jacob was a patient there after being born just shy of 25 weeks, weighing a little under 2 lbs. After some major time spent in the hospital and a few years of regular follow up, Jacob is now a 14 year old strapping lad who’s almost as tall as his 6′ tall mama. Needless to say, Sarah is incredibly grateful to the IWK and the amazing people who helped Jacob in his early start. Holding the yard sale is just a small way of saying thank you!

She’s got this! ~ Another load of donations headed to the storage stocker… Thank you HRM!

Fill it up!

Last year Room 152 raised $4000 and are hoping to beat that total by far! They receive donations year round from their generous consigners and customers, but are still in need of clothing, shoes and accessory donations to sell at the event. So clean out those closets, and give them a hand in kicking last year’s butt! Anything goes, including brands they normally don’t take in store. Donations can be dropped off to the Room 152 (152 Portland Street, Dartmouth) anytime before 5:00 p.m. Friday (May 11th). We thank you so much in advance XO!

Cabbage Patch Kimchi

It’s safe to say that we are food junkies! Whether it be home cooked or takeout…We LOVE food! While we do our very best to stick with eats that lean towards the healthier side, it can be a bit of a challenge when you’re constantly on the go. Especially at this time of year, when it’s more tempting to grab that last eggroll then it is to snatch a piece of broccoli (happened this weekend). Your lips may thank you, but your digestive system… not so much. But thanks to Jessie Palmer, friend and owner of Cabbage Patch Kimchi, we have a recommendation to keep your taste buds happy, while your tummy throws you high-fives!

Cabbage Patch Kimchi, a staple in our fridges!

A common fixture you’ll find in the fridges of Hollis & Jane is kimchi, which is a non-dairy, probiotic Korean condiment made from fermented cabbage. Believe us when we say that this $#@& is ‘da bomb! Not only does it taste great on it’s own or in dishes, it also has incredible health benefits that will have your body jumping for joy! Rich in vitamins A, B, and C, kimchi can help with following:

Replenish the stomach’s microflora
Calm the immune system
Reduce inflammation
Shorten the duration and severity of colds
Reduce anxiety
Decrease cholesterol
Speed up metabolism*

Kimchi literally tastes good with any (savory) dish! We’ve tried it with soups, on burgers, in fish tacos, you name it… kimchi will add a delicious tang and spice! Thanks to Jessie, we are flush with easy, tasty recipes and ideas, some of which she has posted on her website Here we tried Kimchi Hummus, which is excellent with baguette and cheese!

A yummy Charcuterie board is a fantastic idea for holiday parties. So easy to whip together, and literally anything goes! Featured on the board is Kimchi Hummus, which is seriously delicious and very easy to make!
Just add wine! Our charcuterie board isn’t complete without a nice wine glass of Riesling from Gaspereau Vineyards. Cheers!

We absolutely love this super food, and have a hard time keeping it in house (Sarah’s husband literally eats it by the jar full lol)! For the foodie in your life, a bottle of Cabbage Patch Kimchi would make a great stocking stuffer, or unique and yummy hostess gift.

For more information on kimchi and how to use it, contact Jessie at You can also follow Cabbage Patch Kimchi on Instagram @cabbagepatchkimchi

Want to pick up a jar? You can find Cabbage Patch Kimchi at: Halifax Seaport Market, Pete’s Fine Foods, Organic Earth Market and more!

Beautifully Vintage

What’s old can be new again, with vintage clothing! So many clothing styles out there today can look the same, and wearing vintage clothing can be a great way to stand out and have a unique look. The trick is to keep it classic and mix in some modern accessories.  There can be many benefits to wearing vintage, it can be cool and creative also the fabrics and craftsmanship will possibly be of much higher quality, and wearing vintage embraces sustainability.

For vintage clothing collectors the thrill of the hunt is half the fun and the best part is finding real treasures that you love….. clothes that have history and soul.

Dress: AGB Dress Byer California, Shoes: Call It Spring, Earrings: Aldo, Location: Mic Mac Mall.

The dress above is a style from the late 80’s or early 90’s, the cut is classic and the colour really stands out. Pairing the dress with more modern foot wear really brings the whole outfit together.

Dress: Sense International, Shoes: Modern Vintage, Earrings: Aldo, Location: Mic Mac Mall.

Mod with a pop of colour, this dress is fun and has a very 60’s vibe. A great way to tell if clothing is vintage is to look at the labels, if there is a union tag or there is a “lot’ or “style” number on the label it may be vintage. Other ways to tell if clothing is vintage is to take a look at any zippers and exam the sewing job and style. There are so many great resources online, including the Vintage Fashion Guild. (

Dress: No Label/Homemade, Shoes: Michael Kors,  Earrings: Aldo, Location: Mic Mac Mall.

Little black dress with a touch of glamour. This dress may have been homemade and has a 1950’s vibe, very feminine with a flared skirt. The Black Michael Kors heels add a perfect modern finishing touch.

We love the whimsy of vintage clothing and it comes across in these pictures!

We have so many more vintage pieces to showcase in the future, so stay tuned!

Skincare 101

by Sarah

We strongly believe in the importance of great skin care, and how a daily regime is crucial for keeping skin healthy and happy. Before opening Room 152, and prior to my stint as an archaeologist, I worked as an esthetician (still can’t make that connection between my three career choices lol). For a year and a half, I preached the four daily-do’s … cleanser, toner, serum and moisturizer. Above all, you need these in your life twice a day, everyday! Trust me, the results are outstanding! Not only are you helping to protect a portion of your body’s largest organ, you can visibly see the results. Tired, dull skin?… gone! Youthful glow?… you bet! I have kept with this ritual all through my 20’s and 30’s, rarely missing a single day. When people discover my age, their shock cracks me up. It’s satisfying in a way, since I’ve worked long and hard for it, and it sure has paid off!

Two of my absolute (take-my-arm-but-don’t-take-these) favourite products are Charlotte Tilbury Magic Night Cream, and Eminence Citrus & Kale Potent C + E Serum. I’ve tried MANY different products, and have NEVER had the results that these two have given me. Now that I’m in my late 30’s, I’m far more committed to fighting the good fight with those pesky fine lines. I’ve found that whenever I’ve strayed from, or run out of one of these products, my skin starts to show it in a very sad way. So I’ve learned not to, and will stick to them like glue! With a high antioxidant content, as well as citrus fruit oils to tone and refresh, Citrus and Kale Serum helps with improving skin’s hydration and elasticity for a younger looking appearance. Magic Night Cream works over night to firm and improve elasticity, making the skin appear far more smooth and supple. It’s like an over night face lift in a jar!

So there it is, my secret’s revealed! The key to beautiful skin is not just good genes, it’s maintenance. It’s sometimes difficult to stick to such a strict routine, especially after those long, hard days where it’s more appealing to stay stuck to the couch then to drag your feet to the bathroom sink. But I can say with absolute certainty, you’ll thank yourself tomorrow!

P.S. We’ve recently discovered the miracle of GlamGlow. Details to come!

After a mini break prepping for the 3rd anniversary party of Sarah’s store, Room 152, and the official launch of Hollis + Jane, we’re back! We’d like to thank everyone who came out last Friday night to celebrate with us! It was so great to meet all of you, and we’re ecstatic to hear that so many of you have been enjoying the blog so far :D!

With that said, let’s talk LAYERS!!!

As sad as it is to say goodbye to yet another beautiful Summer, we’re just as equally excited to head on into Fall. The crisp cool air, gorgeous tree colours, and endless outfit possibilities make this one of our favourite times of year! One of our absolute, hands down, most loved looks is LAYERS! Big or small, by adding a couple of additional pieces, you can turn a simple look into something so much more. We’ve heard many times that attempts at layering can be intimating, confusing, and is only for the creatives types. We say hogwash! Anyone can layer! No need to rush out to buy all new clothes, you’d be amazed with what you already own. Start small with the basics, and ease your way up to the major leagues. Tank tops, simple sweaters, oversized coats, necklaces, scarves… just layer those puppies!

Here are a couple of step by step ideas to help inspire!

September Must Haves – Leather Jacket, Booties & Blanket Scarves

As the crisp, cool air of Fall approaches, we’re giddy with excitement at the prospects of busting out our favorite pieces that will keep us warm, yet oh-so stylish. If we had to choose three key pieces, we would hands down head for the leather jacket, ankles booties, and a (can it get any bigger?) blanket scarf. Most often, this power trio will pair with any look, whether you’re dressing it up or aiming for casual. For added warmth, throw a cozy fur vest under the jacket for a layered look that will carry you in to the early winter months. Swoon!

Here are a few of our favorite looks to inspire!

Kit Bag Essentials

We’re completely smitten with beauty products! It’s fair to say that we’ve each spent a pretty penny testing the latest and greatest, which guarantees to cure what ails us. Many products (high or low) fall short of their claims, but here are some of our staples that we think have nailed it!

Hollis + Jane

From left to right: Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer by Aveeno, Better Than Sex Mascara by Two Faced, Sugar Lip Caramel Hydrating Balm by Fresh.

Emily: If I had to choose only three products to take on vacation they would definitely be moisturizer, mascara and lip balm. These are my can’t-live-without’s! I love trying new products regularly, and switch between brands often. These are the three I’m loving right now. Aveeno daily moisturizer is a nice light moisturizer with an SPF of 15 (great for summer time!), available at most drug stores and is incredibly affordable. Better Than Sex mascara by Two Faced adds volume to lashes, creating the full, thick look that I love. It’s great for a played down day look, or can be layered for a more dramatic evening look. Sugar Lip Caramel Hydrating Balm by Fresh is my current go-to for lips. It’s deeply hydrating, feels silky smooth and smells incredible! Completely in love!

From left to right: Puff. Me by Design.Me Hair (available at Bowtique Hair & Makeup), BB. Colour Stick in brown by Bumble and Bumble., Blacklight Blue Shampoo by Oligo Professional (available at Bowtique Hair & Makeup).

Sarah: I sometimes feel like I’ve been blessed with the worst-of-the-worst hair type: Thick, fine, and oh-so limp. Combine that with those pesky greys, and you’ve got a hot mess :(. But that’s OK! With a little help from my stylist and some pretty fantastic products, I have finally beaten my flat hair woe’s. Puff. Me gives incredible, long lasting volume (that actually works!), BB Color Stick covers the grey and freshens roots in between color, and Blacklight Shampoo prolongs color life. Perfection!

Summer to Fall

It’s September 1st, and it’s beginning to feel a lot like Fall here on the East Coast! Time to start thinking about putting away your Summer go-to’s, and breaking out those cozy knits and pants. If you’re a bit stressed about the damage a whole new Fall wardrobe will have on the bank account, don’t fret! We’re convinced that most summer pieces can be transitioned into the colder months with a couple of quick add-ons! Throw a cardi over that tank, or pair booties with that dress for a new look fit for Fall. You’ll prolong the wear time of those Summer favs, and get a big high five from wallet while you’re at it! Below are a couple of our favourite transition looks to give you a little inspiration :).

Happy Labour Day Weekend!
