This Saturday Sarah’s store will host their 4th annual Charity Yard Sale, where you’ll be able to snag some amazing finds for only a toonie (no joke)! Think anything from Old Navy to Burberry… you just never know what you’ll find burried in those bins! For the third year in a row Room 152 will be supporting the IWK Foundation, a charity that means a heck of a lot to Sarah. In 2003, her son Jacob was a patient there after being born just shy of 25 weeks, weighing a little under 2 lbs. After some major time spent in the hospital and a few years of regular follow up, Jacob is now a 14 year old strapping lad who’s almost as tall as his 6′ tall mama. Needless to say, Sarah is incredibly grateful to the IWK and the amazing people who helped Jacob in his early start. Holding the yard sale is just a small way of saying thank you!
Last year Room 152 raised $4000 and are hoping to beat that total by far! They receive donations year round from their generous consigners and customers, but are still in need of clothing, shoes and accessory donations to sell at the event. So clean out those closets, and give them a hand in kicking last year’s butt! Anything goes, including brands they normally don’t take in store. Donations can be dropped off to the Room 152 (152 Portland Street, Dartmouth) anytime before 5:00 p.m. Friday (May 11th). We thank you so much in advance XO!
If you find yourself in the neighborhood this Saturday, pop by to the yard sale! Don’t forget, there are mirrors, but no fitting rooms, so wear leggings and a tank for easy try-ons.
Yard Sale Date, Time & Location:
Date: May 12th, 2018
Time: 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
Location: Christ Church, 61 Dundas Street
See you there!

P.S. We took a break to snap our looks :P… Here’s what we have on ~
What’s old can be new again, with vintage clothing! So many clothing styles out there today can look the same, and wearing vintage clothing can be a great way to stand out and have a unique look. The trick is to keep it classic and mix in some modern accessories. There can be many benefits to wearing vintage, it can be cool and creative also the fabrics and craftsmanship will possibly be of much higher quality, and wearing vintage embraces sustainability.
For vintage clothing collectors the thrill of the hunt is half the fun and the best part is finding real treasures that you love….. clothes that have history and soul.
The dress above is a style from the late 80’s or early 90’s, the cut is classic and the colour really stands out. Pairing the dress with more modern foot wear really brings the whole outfit together.
Mod with a pop of colour, this dress is fun and has a very 60’s vibe. A great way to tell if clothing is vintage is to look at the labels, if there is a union tag or there is a “lot’ or “style” number on the label it may be vintage. Other ways to tell if clothing is vintage is to take a look at any zippers and exam the sewing job and style. There are so many great resources online, including the Vintage Fashion Guild. Little black dress with a touch of glamour. This dress may have been homemade and has a 1950’s vibe, very feminine with a flared skirt. The Black Michael Kors heels add a perfect modern finishing touch.
We love the whimsy of vintage clothing and it comes across in these pictures!
We have so many more vintage pieces to showcase in the future, so stay tuned!
After a mini break prepping for the 3rd anniversary party of Sarah’s store, Room 152, and the official launch of Hollis + Jane, we’re back! We’d like to thank everyone who came out last Friday night to celebrate with us! It was so great to meet all of you, and we’re ecstatic to hear that so many of you have been enjoying the blog so far :D!
With that said, let’s talk LAYERS!!!
As sad as it is to say goodbye to yet another beautiful Summer, we’re just as equally excited to head on into Fall. The crisp cool air, gorgeous tree colours, and endless outfit possibilities make this one of our favourite times of year! One of our absolute, hands down, most loved looks is LAYERS! Big or small, by adding a couple of additional pieces, you can turn a simple look into something so much more. We’ve heard many times that attempts at layering can be intimating, confusing, and is only for the creatives types. We say hogwash! Anyone can layer! No need to rush out to buy all new clothes, you’d be amazed with what you already own. Start small with the basics, and ease your way up to the major leagues. Tank tops, simple sweaters, oversized coats, necklaces, scarves… just layer those puppies!
Here are a couple of step by step ideas to help inspire!
Hollis & Jane
Styling tip: A key staple in our closets is the Sèvres Blouse from Aritzia (link in the photo comments), which can be worn under tops and sweaters to create an effortless layering look.
As the crisp, cool air of Fall approaches, we’re giddy with excitement at the prospects of busting out our favorite pieces that will keep us warm, yet oh-so stylish. If we had to choose three key pieces, we would hands down head for the leather jacket, ankles booties, and a (can it get any bigger?) blanket scarf. Most often, this power trio will pair with any look, whether you’re dressing it up or aiming for casual. For added warmth, throw a cozy fur vest under the jacket for a layered look that will carry you in to the early winter months. Swoon!
We’re completely smitten with beauty products! It’s fair to say that we’ve each spent a pretty penny testing the latest and greatest, which guarantees to cure what ails us. Many products (high or low) fall short of their claims, but here are some of our staples that we think have nailed it!
Hollis + Jane
Emily: If I had to choose only three products to take on vacation they would definitely be moisturizer, mascara and lip balm. These are my can’t-live-without’s! I love trying new products regularly, and switch between brands often. These are the three I’m loving right now. Aveeno daily moisturizer is a nice light moisturizer with an SPF of 15 (great for summer time!), available at most drug stores and is incredibly affordable. Better Than Sex mascara by Two Faced adds volume to lashes, creating the full, thick look that I love. It’s great for a played down day look, or can be layered for a more dramatic evening look. Sugar Lip Caramel Hydrating Balm by Fresh is my current go-to for lips. It’s deeply hydrating, feels silky smooth and smells incredible! Completely in love!
Sarah: I sometimes feel like I’ve been blessed with the worst-of-the-worst hair type: Thick, fine, and oh-so limp. Combine that with those pesky greys, and you’ve got a hot mess :(. But that’s OK! With a little help from my stylist and some pretty fantastic products, I have finally beaten my flat hair woe’s. Puff. Me gives incredible, long lasting volume (that actually works!), BB Color Stick covers the grey and freshens roots in between color, and Blacklight Shampoo prolongs color life. Perfection!
It’s September 1st, and it’s beginning to feel a lot like Fall here on the East Coast! Time to start thinking about putting away your Summer go-to’s, and breaking out those cozy knits and pants. If you’re a bit stressed about the damage a whole new Fall wardrobe will have on the bank account, don’t fret! We’re convinced that most summer pieces can be transitioned into the colder months with a couple of quick add-ons! Throw a cardi over that tank, or pair booties with that dress for a new look fit for Fall. You’ll prolong the wear time of those Summer favs, and get a big high five from wallet while you’re at it! Below are a couple of our favourite transition looks to give you a little inspiration :).
It’s sad to say, but another summer is just about to come to a close. Soon it’ll be time to grab some knits, slap on those boots and LAYER! We’ve had a really great summer here on the East Coast, as they typically are. We especially enjoyed the times when we were able to shoot some of the pretty incredible pieces that made their way to Sarah’s store. Here are a couple of our favourites!
